Chefe da máfia preso em França
Giuseppe Falsone estava foragido desde 1999 e era tido como um dos homens mais perigosos de Itália
A Polícia francesa deteve, ontem, sábado, em Marselha, Giuseppe Falsone, considerado o chefe da máfia siciliana na província de Agrigento e cujo nome figurava na lista dos trinta foragidos mais perigosos de Itália. A notícia foi confirmada pelo chefe da Polícia de Agrigento.
A mesma fonte informou que o preso, que foi conduzido a uma esquadra de Marselha, negou ser Falsone, o que obrigou as autoridades policiais a verificar a sua identidade através das impressões digitais.
Segundo fontes próximas da investigação, citadas pela Imprensa italiana, Falsone submeteu-se a várias operações de cirurgia estética para modificar o rosto. Sobre ele pendia uma ordem de busca e captura desde 1999 por associação mafiosa, homicídio e tráfico internacional de droga.
Os investigadores consideram que se trata de uma figura muitopróxima de Bernaredo Provenzano, que substituiu Salvatore Riina na liderança da Cosa Nostra, a mafia siciliana, e que foi preso em 2006.
Depois de conhecer a notícia da captura, o ministro da Justiça italiano, Angelino Alfano, disse que era "um dia feliz para Itália, Sicília e a província de Agrigento. Foi preso um dos chefes mais desapiedados da nossa terra".
Por outro lado, o ministro do Interior italiano, Roberto Maroni, agradeceu o trabalho realizado pela Polícia e comentou que, com a captura de Falsone, "infligiu-se um outro golpe excepcional à criminalidade organizada" graças à detenção do 25.º foragido entre os 30 criminosos mais procurados em Itália.
Operação europeia
O combate ao crime organizado motivou uma operação policial denominada "European Global Operation", realizada entre os dias 7 e 9 deste mês, em 15 países europeus. A iniciativa foi organizada pela Presidência espanhola do Conselho da União Europeia e visou, essencialmente, o tráfico de estupefacientes e de seres humanos, a imigração ilegal, pessoas procuradas pela prática de crimes e contrabando de armas e mercadorias.
Os agentes realizaram mais de 1,2 milhões de controlos policiais e verificaram mais de dois milhões de passaportes e documentos de identidade. A operação, que envolveu mais de 257 mil agentes policiais, terminou com mais de 8000 pessoas detidas e 468 armas apreendidas.
